Cinco de MINE

3 May

You know how in cartoons there is always that one character that is just about to save the day until he sees that BIG RED BUTTON that says “DO NOT PRESS”?  Well folks, thats me!  The more someone tells me to do something, the more intrinsically obligated I feel to do the exact opposite.

Case and point: The more I tried to force myself to write a post about healthy Cinco de Mayo margaritas, the more I wanted to rebel against this tequila-fueled holiday!

But what am I supposed to celebrate while everyone is throwing on their sombreros and tipping back Dos Equis?  Per usual, I found some alternatives!

Uno, Dos, Tres Rebelious Ways to Celebrate on May 5th:

1.  Cinco de Mustache

Defined by Urban Dictionary as “a day when men are men and celebrate the glory that is the moustache”.

All over the country, in places like NYC and Michigan, mustache (or moustache, if you prefer) lovers commemorate the facial patch by drinking PBR, rocking acid washed jeans and proudly flaunting their own unique mustache.

2.  National Hoagie Day

A hoagie, often referred to as a sub, grinder, sandwich, wedge, or po’boy, is one of America’s favorite meal staples.  Although the creator of this holiday remains unknown, May 5 has always been recognized as the official day to celebrate your favorite hoagie.

Looks like this guy chose to celebrate Cinco de Moustache and Hoagie Day!

Eating a hoagie full of carbohydrates is an ideal precursor to a heavy night of drinking–no matter what holiday you decide to celebrate!

3.  Osama Bin Laden Cocktails

While this extremely cliche and politically-incorrect, I couldn’t resist including some of the recent cocktail recipes popping up online after Bin Laden’s recent death.  Drink at your own risk!

Osama Bin Laden:

1 oz Absinthe

1 dash Tabasco

Add dash of Tabasco to shot of absinthe and enjoy!

Red Death

1/2 oz vodka

1/2 oz Southern Comfort

1/2 oz almaretto

1/2 oz triple sec

1/2 oz sloe gin

orange juice

Pour all alcoholic ingredients into a tall glass with ice and fill to top with orange juice!

But if you decide you are a little more old fashioned and want a healthy Cinco de Mayo, clike HERE for an older post I wrote about blood orange margaritas!

I can’t speak for all of us, but for me, spring weather only means one thing: DAY DRINKING.

Urban dictionary defines day drinking as “A version of day dreaming but involving alcohol, drinking during the day and absent from reality for doing it.”

“Oh wow! It’s already 4pm! I don’t know where the time went!”
“Honey, were you day drinking again?

Metaphorically speaking, day-drinking is heaven on earth….the cat’s meow…having your cake and eating it too (errr, that may not apply)!  Reach for a Mike’s Hards, crack open a twisted tea or start icing bros!

So where’s the danger in all of this?  It could be right in the palm of your hands!  Let’s take a closer look at what’s really inside everyone’s favorite malt beverages!

Mike’s Hard Lemonade: 220 Calories

Save 100 calories by opting for a Mike’s Light Lemonade!

Half & Half Hard Iced Tea: 250 Calories

That’s the calorie equivalent of 2 1/2 Miller Lites!

Smirnoff Ice: 228 Calories

28 calories more than a Krispy Kreme Donut!

Colt 45 Blast: calories UNKNOWN

There are no nutriton facts available for this new flavored beer, promoted by Snoop Dogg….but I have a feeling the numbers aren’t pretty.  I Health-conscious Snoop Dogg fans might want to stick to gin ‘n’ juice!

The Buzz on the Royal Wedding

27 Apr

It’s official–ROYAL WEDDING fever is rampant and taking over popular culture as we know it.  TV news shows are covering the wedding around the clock.  Sites are selling out of wedding memorabilia and knockoff engagement rings.  Dunkin Donuts is offering a Royal Wedding donut.

Kate and William’s wedding craze has even trickled down to the alcohol industry!  Here is some of the latest drinking dish surrounding the nuptuals:

  • Kate and William allegedly ban beer at their wedding and reception ceremonies!  Click here to read the full story!

  • A facebook page dedicated to creating Royal Wedding drinking games has gained popularity among social media users.  Some of my favorite suggestions include taking a shot everytime Prince William thinks something racist or having a drink everytime you see Elton John’s baby! Go to the facebook page to find your favorite or suggest a game of your own!

  • BrewDog, a British Brewery, created a beer laced with Viagra called “Royal Virility Performance” to celebrate the upcoming wedding!  Three of these beers is supposed to equal one dose of the performance enhacing drug!

  • Lastly, check out the amazing royal wedding reception cocktail menu created by noted bartender Angus Winchester.  It includes 4 gin cocktails, symbolizing “Something Borrowed”, “Something Blue”, “Something Old” and “Something New”!

“The Newlyweds” cocktail is made with gin, lemon juice and fresh ginger!

St. Patty’s Day Beer (Spoiler Alert: This could get ugly)

St. Patty’s Day Beers

by Blogger Brian

Happy St. Patty’s day!  I figured I should step up my blogging game and talk about some beer for the big day tomorrow.  Most people will probably want to drink Irish beers in celebration of their .0001% Irish heritage so I’m going to break down my top 4 picks.

1.  Guinness Draught – This one’s a no-brainer.  Imported straight from Ireland this beer 4.2% ABV.  This may surprise you given its full body and rich flavor but what’s even more surprising is that each 12oz bottle only contains 125 calories!!

2.  Harp Lager – This is a light colored beer standard imported from Ireland.  Mix one of these guys 50:50 with a Guinness for a St. Patty’s day tradition, the black and tan.  At 142 calories and 4.5% ABV its comparable to a Guinness in terms of bang for your buck.

3.  Smithwick’s  Irish Ale –  Brewed by Guinness, Smithwick’s is touted as Ireland’s number one ale.  At 5% ABV and about 150 calories, Smithwick’s is another great choice for your St. Patty’s Day festivities.

4.  Killian’s Irish Red – While this is a domestic beer (brewed by Coors/Miller), it is still a popular St. Patty’s Day beer.  While not one of my favorite choices, Killian’s gets the job done at 5% ABV and 162 calories.

 BONUS ROUND!

Irish Car Bombs – These are my St. Patrick’s Day favorite!  Coincidently, it is also the worst for you (go figure).  I’ll break down the car bomb by its components:
Jameson Whiskey – 69 calories/oz
Bailey’s Irish Cream – 117 calories/oz
6oz of Guinness – 68 calories
Total – 254 calories!

Wow, that’s rough.  Good thing spring break is over because I’m not going to be able to stay away from car bombs on St. Patty’s.  Anyways, that’s all for now. IT’S DRINKING TIME!!!

On Your Mark, Get Set, DRINK!

24 Feb

With two days until I make my half-marathon debut, I have been doing extensive research on pre-race nutrition and hydration….

The good news:  I get to eat as many carbs as I want for the next two days without any guilt.  Bring on the pasta, bread and potatoes.

The bad news: NO BOOZE!  Before a race, an athlete needs to consume as much water and fluids as possible to up the body’s hydration level.    I tried to plea my case for beer’s high carb content but that didn’t fly.

BUT I MIGHT NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN BEER AND HYDRATION; COULD BEER BE THE NEXT SPORTS DRINK!?

Andrea Henkel, German sprint racer

One Bavarian beer company thinks so!  They produce a non-alcoholic beer, called Erdinger Alkoholfrei, that promises isotonic benefits to athletes and fellow drinkers.  Like Gatorade or other sports drinks,  Erdinger Alkoholfrei is said to help athletes recover and rehydrate post-workout .  It also promises the same great taste of regular beer minus the alcohol (only .05 alcohol content) and hangover side-effects.

Erdinger Alkoholfrei is growing in popularity all over the world, but  non-alcoholic beers have never found much profitability in the U.S.  Making matters worse, this “athlete’s beer” goes for $10 per six-pack.

After weighing the pros and cons of Erdinger Alkoholfrei, I am still not convinced.  Unless this beer is the best tasting beverage since McDonald’s Shamrock Shake (available NOW–so excited!), it doesn’t seem worth it to me.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  IS BEER THE FUEL OF THE FUTURE FOR ATHLETES?

Margarita Madness

22 Feb

National Margarita Day may not be an official holiday in any legitimate way at all.  HOWEVER, it could not come at a better time for those of us in dire need of a pick-me-up from our winter blues.

The most extreme celebration takes place at  Jimmy Buffet’s Margartaville at Mohegan Sun Casino where there will be truly LOCO drink deals and giveaways!

But aside from drinking a margarita (or three), you can celebrate National Margarita Day any way you choose!  I suggest blasting the Jimmy Buffet, digging out your sombrero and making some homemade chips and guacamole!

Frozen Blood Orange Margarita from Ina Garten

Blood Oranges are in season and have amazing health benefits!  On top of that, they give your margarita a much-needed makeover with a bright oragne hue and blast of citrus flavor!

1/2 cup fresh blood orange juice
2 tbsp lemon juice
3 cups ice
1 cup Triple Sec
1 cup white tequila
4 frozen margarita glasses

Combine the blood orange juice, lemon juice, Triple Sec, and ice in a blender and puree until completely blended. Add the tequila and puree for 2 seconds more.

  1. Alternatively, combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake hard to form ice crystals.
  2. Pour or strain into  prepared frozen margarita glasses or glasses filled with ice and serve.

Homemade Baked Tortilla Recipe from Healthy Food For Living

Ingredients:

  • corn tortillas
  • canola oil cooking spray
  • Kosher salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly coat both sides of each corn tortilla with cooking spray.
  3. Stack the tortillas on top of one another, and cut the pile in half. Cut each half in half again; then cut each quarter in half. Every tortilla will yield 8 triangles.
  4. Place tortilla triangles on baking sheets in one layer. Sprinkle with salt.
  5. Bake tortillas until crisp, lightly browned, and slightly curled, about 12 minutes. Watch closely so they don’t burn.
  6. Toss the warm tortilla chips with additional salt to taste, if desired.

Everyone’s Favorite 4-Letter Word: L-O-V-E

8 Feb

Sorry Salt-n-Pepa, we aren’t talking about that.  We are talking about L-O-V-E and it’s time to celebrate!   Now, who’s with me!?

“But wait, Steph…You don’t have a boyfriend.  You aren’t seeing anyone, going on dates or even casually drunk-texting a single male specimen.  I even heard a rumor you recently went to the movies alone.”

Statement 1: True. Statement 2: True.  Statement 3: I plead the 5th.

But I truly believe Valentine’s Day is not just for those of us with a significant other!

This quote from @TheSingleWoman sums it up perfectly:

“You don’t need a lover in your life to have love in your life!”

And what am I loving right now?  Valentine’s Day Cocktails!  I have an A-List Valentine’s Day party to attend this week and I am falling in love with the thought of making these drinks for all the guests!
